What is SPAAMFAA ?

The Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America was founded in 1958 at Syracuse NY. with the purpose of preserving and displaying antique fire apparatus and promoting an appreciation of fire service history all across America.

Our local chapter owns, maintains and operates a 1923 Ahrens Fox pumper that originally belonged the to Syracuse Fire Department.

Do I need to own a fire truck to join?

Absolutly not !  If you do have an emergency vehicle great!!   If not - you are more than welcome to join us, there is always something to do. The group owns the vehicle I mentioned in the last question and we are still ( Over many years) putting the finishing touches on that. Furthermore, a lot of our members do own one or more vehicles and as often as not we can use help as a crew member or driver when we are taking them out or - in my personal case - I have had members over to help in restoring my vehicle. You do not need to own a vehicle at all. Maybe you just have always loved Firetrucks and Emergency Vehicles, maybe you are interested in the Fire Service and its rich history. Maybe you are considering "adopting" a fire truck of your very own. Whatever the reason, we would love to have you on board !

What kinds of things do you do?

The group meets once a month at different locations around Central NY. Often it is at a Fire Department that is a member of our group. We also meet at members homes, a couple of privately owned retired fire houses and on occasions we have met at museums. The meetings often begin with a meal and many times include a tour of the meeting location or some kind of presentation.  We also have a Summer Picnic - usually somewhere that can accomodate a few emergency vehicles as well as an annual Christmas party. Every three years we host the national SPAAMFAA convention and have a large Muster.  In between people might get together and bring a few rigs to a parade or a car show. Members rigs have also been used in Weddings, as prom rides, in funerals and in different public relations duties.

COME JOIN US !

CNY SPAAMFAA membership is comprised of Fire Departments, individuals, familys and several couples. It is a group with activities the whole family can enjoy. Come join us and find out how fun it can be to help preserve a part of history !
